• Orthokeratology

No eyeglasses. No daytime contact lenses. No surgery.

Enjoy great vision for your daily activities without undergoing surgery! Be free of daytime contact lenses and eyeglasses.

    • What is orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a non-surgical treatment using specially designed high oxygen permeable contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea (the front surface of your eye); these rigid gas permeable contact lenses are usually worn only while you sleep and provide clear, natural vision when the lenses are removed upon waking. This method can be used to treat myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism as an alternative to eyeglasses, refractive surgery, or daytime contact lenses.

Ortho-k may sometimes be referred to as corneal refractive therapy (CRT) or overnight vision correction.

    • Who is a candidate?

Ortho-k is appropriate for all ages, from elementary school children to active seniors. Candidacy will depend on tear secretion, corneal shape, rigidity of the cornea, and overall eye health.

    • How is candidacy determined?

Our specially trained Oakville Eye Care optometrists will perform a complete vision assessment, eye health exam, tear film analysis, and corneal topography scan to determine if orthokeratology will be a suitable treatment.

    • Are there any risks or side effects?

Wearing ortho-k lenses carries the same risk as wearing soft disposable daytime contact lenses. There is a small risk of eye infection when any contact lens is worn, whether they be soft disposable or gas permeable contact lenses and whether they be worn during the day or overnight.

It is very important for all contact lens wearers to take proper care of their lenses as instructed by their doctor; improper care can increase the chance of adverse reactions.

    • Remember:

To achieve optimal results from ortho-k treatment and to ensure maximum eye health, patients must adhere to the recommended lens care and wear procedures, as well as return for their scheduled progress evaluations.

  • Comprehensive Examinations

A thorough eye exam to assess your vision and eye health. Aside from vision tests, we also screen for eye diseases; including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

Comprehensive eye exams for toddlers and children is the most effective approach to the prevention or early detection of eye and vision problems.

OHIP Coverage: Children 19 years or younger & adults 65 years or older are covered by OHIP for an eye exam once every year.

  • Children’s Eye Exams

Babies and young children don’t have to know the alphabet or even speak to have their vision tested. Many vision tests we use are pictures or symbols familiar to preschoolers, and children can respond by naming, matching or pointing. And many of the other test we do to assess for eye muscle alignment, vision, and eye health, our Oakville Eye Care doctors will complete objectively, so young children don’t have to be able to communicate well to be evaluated. Our doctors use quick non invasive techniques to test a baby's vision, including popular children’s videos, toys, and our clinical experience to keep your child’s attention during the examination!

  • Digital Imaging

    • Digital Retinal Imaging

A photograph is worth a million words. Now we can take a digital photograph of the nerve layer (the retina) that lines the inside the eye. Through the photo we can see how healthy the eye is or if there are any abnormalities that may threaten vision, or need attention and monitoring. It is especially recommended for patients with a history of diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration or any other retinal disorders. These photographs provide a great baseline for comparison for future visits to help maintain a lifetime of healthy vision. The screening only takes a couple minutes and the image can be seen immediately by both you and the doctor at the time of visit, allowing quick diagnosis.

    • Optical Coherence Tomography

Unique to a limited number of practices in Oakville, we offer the latest in ocular imaging with a 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take a cross-section picture of your retina, the light sensing tissue lining the back of your eye. With OCT, we can now analyze each of the retina’s nine distinctive layers, allowing our Oakville Eye Care doctors to pinpoint any abnormalities and measure the retinal thickness. This is important because it allows our doctors to accurate diagnose and manage for glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, post-surgery edema and other retinal diseases.

    • Digital Corneal Topography

To aid in specialty contact lens fittings (for keratoconus, post-surgical corneae, and orthokeratology) our practice also boasts the latest in corneal imaging, a Medmont computerized corneal topography. Often regarded as the gold standard in our industry, it is a mandatory tool used by our Oakville Eye Care doctors to properly design, fit, and monitor orthokeratology treatment.
