Finally. Real, long-lasting relief for dry eye.

Offering one of the latest-technology in dry eye management, we are one of the few clinics in Oakville offering LipiFlow treatment. This technology allows us to now treat one of the root causes of dry eye, called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). MGD is a dysfunction of the structure and function of the oil glands in our eyelids. The glands secrete oils that are vital in a healthy tear film and most often lacking in an individual with dry eye symptoms. Lipiflow is the fundamental treatment that targets the oil glands to flush out blockages and helps regain function of the existing oil glands and preserve the existing structure. So instead of just addressing the symptoms of dry eye, we are able to treat the cause.

One treatment every nine to twelve months is often all that is needed to minimize dry eye symptoms.

With a comprehensive dry eye assessment, we will look at the structural integrity of each patients eyelids to determine if there will be benefit of a LipiFlow treatment. As seen in the above photo, there is significant blockage of some of the meibomian glands centrally and partial blockage of other glands to the right.

How does Lipiflow work?

Lipiflow treatment works to reduce symptoms that are commonly associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) such as burning, tearing, and redness. MGD is caused from a change in structure and/or function of the meibomian glands. Lipiflow aims to remove obstruction in the glands, which would improve their function. During the treatment heat and light vibrations are applied to the glands which facilitates the removal of any lipid blockage. Once the meibomian glands are clear of obstruction their function improves.

How long does Lipiflow treatment take?

The treatment only takes 12 minutes. This consists of 100 gland expressions.

What can I expect to feel from treatment?

The in-office treatment will begin with our patient sitting in a reclined chair. We will begin with instilling one to two drops of mild topical anesthetic in both eyes. Next, we will apply a disposable single-use eyepiece (activator) under their eyelids, similar to a contact lens. When the treatment begins one can expect to feel some heat and gentle massage on their eyelids.

How long do the effects of a Lipiflow treatment last?

It takes approximate 6-8 weeks post-treatment for the meibomian gland function to be improved. After that, the effects can last for up to a year. Patients still need to keep up with their at-home treatment after the Lipiflow for optimal results; this may sometimes include taking an omega-3 supplement, wearing a heating mask, using artificial tears, or doing blinking exercises regularly.
